Umnotho brings families together to collaborate in buying land and building affordable homes. Umnotho takes the self-help and Stokvel approach to housing. Umnotho was started by low-income families from the informal settlements of Muldersdrift, frustrated by the terrible living conditions in the squatter camps - poor sanitation and cramped shacks.

In 2011 there were 12 families, each contributing R150 per month towards buying land. In 2015 there were 650 families who collectively saved R4.5 million and bought 28 hectares of land. Today Umnotho has 60 hectares of land

The Skokvel is about us coming together. When we build as individuals, it costs more and it takes a time. Buying building material and building together makes housing affordable.
