Umnotho Village was started by low-income families from the informal settlements of Muldersdrift, frustrated by the terrible living conditions in the squatter camps - uncollected waste and poor sanitation. "We want a better life".

From 2011, twelve families started saving R150 per month towards buying their own land. In 2015 there were 650 families who collectively saved R4.5 million to buy 28 hectares of land. Today Umnotho has 60 hectares of land

Our Desire, Is To Build Our Own Houses!
The system in Gauteng does not allow low-income people to build their own houses, hence we find ourselves in the squatter camps with poor living conditions.
Umnotho brings a model that allows families to build decent houses for themselves.
Current Developments

Housing Stokvel
The Skokvel is about us coming together to build our houses. When we do it as individuals, it is way expensive and it takes a long time. Together we have the power to buy in bulk and buy cheaper.

We don't have to owe banks lots of money and risk loosing our homes. We can finance each other, we have the numbers and the unity.​
​​
The Stokvels model is used by many people to achieve great things. Some buy groceries together, taxi owners buy each other taxis, and many other examples.
