Empowering Communities to Provide for Themselves
Umnotho’s community development work is driven by a clear mission:
to end poverty by empowering communities to become self-reliant and sustainable.
Our programmes focus on meeting immediate needs while building long-term skills, dignity, and economic opportunity.
Our Focus Areas
Community development at Umnotho is holistic and people-centred.
Our work focuses on five core areas:

Food Kitchens & Food Gardens
Skills
Development

Youth
Development

Women Empowerment

Small Business
Support
Together, these initiatives strengthen families, support livelihoods, and create pathways out of poverty.
Food Kitchen Programme

Daily Meals, Delivered with Dignity in a Safe Environment
Umnotho provides a daily cooked meal to 300 people within the community.
Each meal includes:
-
Two vegetables
-
Meat
-
A starch
The food kitchen plays a vital role in supporting vulnerable families and ensuring consistent access to nutritious food.
Youth Development

Preparing Young People for Opportunity
We support youth development to prepare young people for the world of work and broader opportunities.
Our initiatives include:
-
Job preparation sessions
-
On-the-job training
-
Access to information
-
Exchange programmes
These initiatives help young people gain confidence, exposure, and practical experience.
Food Gardens

Teaching Communities to Provide for Themselves
Umnotho provides access to land and resources that enable families to grow their own food.
The gardens serve multiple purposes:
-
Supplying food to families
-
Supporting the daily food kitchen
-
Generating income for beneficiaries
Beyond food production, the gardens promote self-reliance by equipping community members with practical agricultural skills.
Women Empowerment

Supporting the Backbone of Our Communities
Women make up 68% of Umnotho’s beneficiaries.
Poverty and homelessness disproportionately affect women, particularly as they are often the primary caregivers within households.
Umnotho promotes women-friendly platforms and supports programmes that aim to lift women out of persistent cycles of poverty, creating opportunities for stability, independence, and growth.
Skills Development

Building Practical, Employable Skills to Uplift Our Community
Our programmes are designed to improve employability and income-generating potential.
Training offered includes:
-
Waiters and bartenders
-
End User Computing
-
Plumbing, welding, and forklift operation
To date, more than 3,000 people have been trained through Umnotho’s skills development programmes.
Small Business Support

Creating Space for Enterprise and Upwards Mobility
Land ownership enables Umnotho to support small businesses by providing access to working spaces and income-generating opportunities.
Currently, 14 small businesses operate on or around Umnotho-owned properties, accessing both space and support.
These businesses receive training and assistance through Seeds of Africa, a non-profit organisation that provides:
-
Business training
-
Seed capital
-
Ongoing support to enterprises in and around Muldersdrift
This approach strengthens local economies and keeps value circulating within the community.

Building Sustainable Communities
Community development at Umnotho is not about dependency.
It is about empowerment, ownership, and long-term resilience.
By combining food security, skills development, youth support, women empowerment, and enterprise development, Umnotho helps communities move toward lasting stability and shared prosperity.
