Why We Created Our Own Financial Institution
Building a home is expensive. Traditional financial systems often do not recognise the realities faced by low- and middle-income families, especially those without formal employment or credit histories.
To overcome these barriers, Umnotho took a historic step:
we established the Umnotho Financial Institute, a cooperative financial institution designed to:

Support
Home building for our community members

Enable
Community savings

Finance
Shared development goals
Our goal is simple:
to create a financial home that understands our needs, our challenges, and our aspirations.
Our Banking License

The Umnotho Financial Institute was granted a banking license by the South African Reserve Bank under the Co-operative Banks Act 40 of 2007.
This licence allows us to:
• collectively save toward building materials,
• access affordable building loans, and
• support members through insurance and other financial tools.
This is more than banking.
This is financial empowerment rooted in community ownership.
